Tuppurala school is one of the elementary schools in the city of Mikkeli. This year we have approximately 170 pupils in our school. We have classes 1-6 and five classes for children with special needs. The number of classes is 12.In the same building we also have three pre-school classes. They are under the administration of social welfare.
The goals for our work this year are e.g.
- Co-operation with pre-school classes, classes from 1 to 6 and with the special classes. The old and new building form a" horseshoe".
- The prevention of bullying ( KESTO groups, one girl and one boy from every 5th and 6th class)
- Creation of good atmosphere for students, teachers and other personnel by arranging meetings and different events
- Good manners are emphasized everywhere.
The older part of the present building is called brickbuilding (built in 1980), and the new part is the new building (built in 2004). The pre-school premises are called Pesäpuu (Nesttree). In the same complex we also have our sportshall. Between the buildings there are schoolyards , where pupils spend their 15-minute breaks. Our school is close to Lake Saimaa (the biggest lake in Finland), next to the school are an ice hockey rink( football field) and a track for jogging. In winter we can go cross-country skiing right from the doorsteps.
Our school has a PARENT-TEACHER-STAFF COMMITTEE for 2011-2015, there are five parents, two teachers and one person from the other staffing it.
CURRICULUM
Tuppurala school teaches the pupils theoretical subjects and practical skills needed in life. We try to teach them social skills by supporting the parents in bringing up their children. The basis of all our teaching are traditional Finnish values and cultural background.

SPECIAL NEEDS
We have one teacher who concentrates in giving special training and education for speech impediments, reading and writing problems or similar special needs.
Our special teachers have classes 1-6E (maximum number of pupils 10 in a class).
These pupils have minor learning difficulties and problems with concentration.
The classes follow a special curriculum with a strong emphasis on basic skills. This gives them the same kind of experience as pupils in mainstream classes. Each pupil has an Individual Plan.Whenever possible some of the pupils are intergrated in ordinary classes e.g. in art, physical education, English.
